Creating an entryway is designing the very first impression when someone enters your home…so make it count! Why are first impressions so important in design? It sets the tone for the rest of your home, showcases what is yet to come, and transcends beyond the present moment, as it is the very last area guests will see before saying goodbye. Creating an entryway that is warm and inviting, functional for you, your family, and your guests, and brings a pop of seasonal cheer, will be a great starting point to your home! So let’s get to it!

Step #1: Measure Twice, Buy Once
Everything in the design world is based on the space you have (the measurements) and what you can make fit or “work” in that space. Measure your space and then find the style/design of an entryway table you would prefer. It’s important to note, especially with the entryway, the width is just as important as the length. As the saying goes, make sure to double-check your measurements before running to the store or ordering online, and bring a tape measure with you!
Tip: Once you have pinpointed an entry table you would like to purchase, use the measurements to outline your floor (and/or wall) with tape. While walking into your home imagine the piece with the specific measurements in place. Does it work?
Step #2: Identify the function of the space
This is a crucial part of designing any space! What do you need in your entryway to make your life easier? Do you need more storage in your home? Would you like a sleek design or an entryway table with drawers? Would you like one shelf or two shelves (or even three)? Your design will be influenced by the functionality of the space and the storage needs of your home.

Tip: Think about the different components of your ideal entryway – can you make it happen? Yes, you can!
Step #3: Small space? Think Big
If I have learned one thing from listening to design podcasts, it would be to go big or don’t buy anything at all! Yes, this even goes for small spaces too! When designing any room, if you purchase small items, the walking space is larger, yes, but the eye is drawn to the items, which are smaller. When placing larger items in the same space, everything looks grander and the eye is focused on the bigger pieces, not so much the overall space.

When using this trick, choose your shape and go big!
I found this large rectangular mirror at Ikea. I love the color and design!

Tip: Always scale up with your decor items and furniture pieces!
Step #4: Make the finishing touches count!
When it comes to functionality or step #2, think about what you need to make your space feel complete. Do you need a place for your keys? Would you like to showcase sentimental items? Have you found a scent for your home? What type of seasonal items can you display?
Gosh, the sky’s the limit with decor pieces! Start layering with simple pieces and play around with the display of items!

Tips: Think beyond the current design trends and outsiders’ opinions. Decorate and design from a place of authenticity, function for you and your partner or family and be bold with your choices. When it comes down to it, it’s your home so do what you feel is best!
